>> "bike people"! >> hey all of your cyclists out there, thank you for tuning into "bike people." i'm so excited because once again we are going on an adventure on two wheels. >> we are. i have some fantastic video

here. a buddy of mine mark from orlando florida, national sales manager for a company called cat bike, maker of recumbent bike, he came up and we went to high trestle bridge. great day. we have great scenery.

i have to toe you some video. you're going to enjoy it. >> let's check it out. >> pancakes. let's stop for pancakes. >> the lion's club has $5 pancakes. they were wonderful pancakes. >> well, you can buy the

>> i will make you a trade: rhubarb pie for pancakes? >> deal. >> it's a lot of great bikers on the trail, and the trail was so beautiful and smooth that day. >> it's like you are going as fast as any other biker. >> the ride is nice and a

comfortable saddle. the bridge is beautiful. perfect sky. got to see a great shot of the river there. it was a beautiful ride. >> i think you're fully in the flat tire. one of my favorite--

>> we talked to other cyclists there and had a wonderful time joying the ride and the trail together. it was a wonderful day. >> you always run into someone you do. >> we have to came here. they have winnings and we have

to bring the crew up here. let me tell you year we going to have some nun. we are to take this place over and really rock that bowling alley. >> hey, that looks like a lot of fun. i noticed that you stopped for

pancakes and you know how i love stopping for pancakes before you head out on the ride. and the recumbent bike looks so comfortable. i just don't know anything about recumbents. i'm not sure if someone like he could hop on and ride.

>> i tell you, if you can sit in your favorite easy chair at night and smile you can ride a recumbent bike. it's that easy. the learning conserve is about that long. you just have to be able to sit down in it, have fun and smile.

>> how do you choose one. >> i will make you a deal. since you want to learn ant recumbent bike, i will teach you about recumbents if you do me a favor. hop in your car, take the film crew, go up to the trail, find all of the attractions around

there that our viewers will have a great trip to go take and i will teach you about recumbents. >> that sounds awesome. i know a lot about the iowa trails. the communities are so welcoming. the history and there's always

something delicious to eat and drink. that will be my favorite part. >> rhubarb pie is what i'm hoping for. >> i bet i could find you some rhubarb pie. and i'm thinking of a place that has just the right ice cream for

it. >> rhubarb pie and ice cream. the doesn't get any better an that. >> it will be a hit for us. >> fantastic. it's a deal then. >> all right. >> i'm headed up to the woodward

madrid area and i'm so excited. i know where i'm going but if you're unsure on where to go, i want, if you have a few tips on the best trails and how to get there. first stop at your local bike shops. they have tips and they're

experts and they have ridden all of the rails and can tell you about the local landmarks. next get on your computer and hop on google maps. so let's just click on that and i'm going to just type in where i want to go, madrid iowa, simple, and there's a map.

now, we need to know where the bike trails are. so you will take your cursor and just move it over on top of the satellite box here to the right and scroll down until you see bicycling, click it, and the bike trails show up. what is more exciting is if you

scroll out you can see the bike trails statewide. if you scroll out even further, nationwide, too. amazing. if you're like me you will want more information than just where the trail is. so let's check out iowa national

heritage foundation. their web site shows you not only where the trails are but you can click on the little dot that says the trail head and it brings up all of the information you will ever want to know about the trail and local landmarks. and lastly, you will want to

check out the chamber of commerce in each town to find out about all of the cool things that are happening in the area. i'm out of here. >> well, listen, i knew you wanted to learn about recumbents so i had the guys set up a few of those here.

>> yay. how long have they been making these. >> they have been making recumbent bikes in england as early as 1905. we had a manufacturer in iowa in the 80s. >> aware' full of information.

>> i'm full of a lot. >> yes you are. >> how about we hop off and look at the rest of the bike. >> let's do it. >> what do we have here forest. >> we talked about the lanier company in iowa in the 1980's and take had a recumbent bike

with below seat steering. these two units are above seat steering. >> cool. i can tell the difference other than color that this one seams like it's a little shorter and that is one is longer. what is the difference?

>> his is a short wheel base recumbent bike and this is the long wheel base recumbent. the difference is, think about it in automobile terms. if you were in the most smooth riding luxury car. that's the long wheel is for, it smoothes the ride out and gives

you a comfortable smooth ride. this is a little more of a sports car. it will be quicker and a little more responsive in the way it handles and steers so it will be like a little two seater sports car. >> this should be the one.

>> ferrari red, i know. >> why do people ride the recumbent? for comfort. if you have ever ridden a bike, your back hurts, your neck or wrist might hurt. this takes a lot of the pressure away from riding on a regular

bicycle. >> we have seen the two wheel. we rode on the side by side. now let's look at the three wheel or the trike. >> let's look at it. >> this so comfortable i could imagine anyone could sit down ask ride this bike.

>> the learning conserve is short on the trike. get down on it and you can take off. >> how would you compare the maintenance of this to a regular up right road bike. >> a lot of these parts are the same as on your road bike for

instance. the things that are unique, it had as a long chain, about two and a half times longer than a traditional bicycle chain. there's a little maintenance there, not unlike your single bike, but there's more of it to maintain and that's what your

bike shop is for, take it there every year and have it tuned up appropriately. but otherwise, most of the components are the same as on your single bikes. there's not a lot of extra maintenance. >> i love riding all of the

trails in iowa, so that would mean i 92 today transport this. what is the best way to get it >> couple of different ways. first, they make specific bike racks to carry a trike. people have suvs put them in the back. we have trailers you can buy.

put the trike on the trailer and haul it. >> i think we should take this for a spin, my friend. >> let's go. >> i am so excite odd show you this. i know he you don't have a lot of time so i kept it short.

this is just a flavor of what we done so far. are you ready? >> you bet. let's show it. >> good morning. i'm suzet. >> joe mcnally. >> great.

i'm excited for the tour today and looking forward to seeing all of the plants especially the prairie. are you ready to get started? >> absolutely. >> let's go. >> joe, it seems like we're out in the middle of nowhere but we

have a paradise here. we're at the iowa arbitrium. very cool. what is your job here. >> i'm the horticultural manager >> how did all of this evolve? >> back in the 1960's there were a group of people in a local short culture club that started

to get together and start an arbitrium. from there, it has expanded into what you see now in addition to the 40acres. we have another 338 total acres in addition to this with prairie lands across the street. >> we're at the prairie now

probably one of my favorite landscapes. i would love to have my entire yard look like this. i don't know if my neighbors would like that but it's so important to have more of this in iowa, right? as you know we're "bike people"

so we like to take a trailer and bring our stuff with us and we're just a few miles off the trail. could we bring picnic stuff out here? a lot of people mach a day of the arbitrium. >> thank you very much.

thank you for having me in today. let's have a tour. we're interested in the railway and the trestle bridge and how all of that evolved. >> so the connecting train from des moines went up twice a day for the east and west traffic

from hiawatha to des moines. >> from passengers? >> passengers only. they had prints here but we're just showing passengers. >> this look like the trestle bridge here. that's the 1912 bridge, the longest in the world at the

time. you can see from the nice clean pedestals of the bridge that it was quite an early picture. later the growth of all kinds grew up around the base. >> so i imagine you probably have several biking stories coming out here.

>> yes, there are biking stories out there to be had and one in particular involves a family from wisconsin. they started in woodward and rode back to woodward ask back to our farm all on their and they got here and they wanted to purchase quite a few

things. i said that's no problem. and she said, i tell you what. she goes, i don't think we could make it back up here. she was-- i would pay you if your husband would put our bicycles in the back of the truck and give us a ride to wood

award. and we said it would be no problem at all. so we loaded the bikes and up took them to woodward and the next day was sanford sunday and they came out. >> oh, my goodness. >> she was so happy.

>> that's just the way it is in iowa, i believe this, we're genuine and want to help. >> no problem. >> they need a ride back it's no problem. usually someone is around. >> up uh-huh. >> homemade vanilla ice cream

and his favorite, grandma-made, his favorite, grandma-made >> you are missing out on the most amazing pie. i don't know. i think the ice cream might be my favorite part. so good. thanks for coming down to the

water park and showing off your bike. >> glad to be here. >> you made such an awesome lots of people out here to see watt crew made. tell us what makes your bike so good. >> it's a recumbent tricycle and

pretty much anybody can ride it, anybody with disabilities it's good for but i also do endures racing which getting popular because they're so comfortable, and aerodynamic. the founder of the company, he moved here from sao paulo, brazil.

>> i'm paul. i'm a brazilian mechanical engineer and that's my passion. so i was in sao paulo, brazil, and i saw this diamondback bike, a really comfortable bike. when i hooked at that, i had an epiphany that i could also make bikes and then i called my wife

upstairs, rafaela, and i said, look at this. i said what? i said this, this bike, do you mind? >> i said we're going to move for the bike and start a company. she said what are you talking

about. are you crazy? >> he just loves manufacturing so he decided to make this comfort bike and started doing a bunch of research and found out recumbent bikes are cool but they're stuck in 1990, they're heavy, not appealing and not

modern. he said, being a mechanical engineer, i can make it super lightweight, very cool. it's made out of aluminum that everybody can enjoy and i appreciate it. >> i and imagine there are a lot of people out there that are--

what people are buying the bike? what people are interested in the bike. >> mostly baby boomers. we had a couple hasn't been off the right in 35 years. first ride, they took it out. >> thank you for coming out. >> listen, we have a good buddy

of mine, bob, will be meeting us here today. you want to learn more about recumbent bike? >> yeah. >> he is a great recumbent rider and just finished across the united states. >> he is coming here.

>> can't wait. >> oh, gosh. speak of the devil. >> bob? >> hi. >> are you ready? >> i'm always ready for a bike ride. >> good to see you.

>> bob just got back from a great ride across the united states on his recumbent bike and we wanted to talk about recumbents today and he will be a great resource for us here. >> first of all it's great to meet you. second, this is the kind of

recumbent bike i'm confused it doesn't look easy to ride. it looks comfortable when you're on it. how not world do you get started. >> it's a little bit like an up right 15 vehicle. i have put people on it--

>> does it take you very long? >> not at all. the type of balance is a little different but the way you feel it is the same as bike. >> it's confusing because your feet are up here. >> and the chain longer but other than that, you're still--

just a real comfortable scene. >> why do you ride this type of bike? >> there was a time when i was on long rides that it would sometimes bother my upper back. and a pinched nerve maybe would be a problem. you know riding 40 or 50miles

wasn't a problem, but day after day of more than that would get to me. so i decided to take a look at recumbent. and i will be honest with you, the first time i rode-- i can be laid back the whole ride. >> nice and casual.

just enjoy your thoughts. >> it is maybe not a racing bike, but i'm not a racer. just a tourist. >> why did you choose this one, a higher up one. >> there are it's that's a good question. there are a lot of styles of

recumbent bikes. this is more like the recumbent a little faster. i get some grief from my daughter, or i did when i first bought this, from being a triathlete. she thinks this is an old man's >> did you tell her you were an

old man? >> number two, i said all of the land speed records are set on recumbent at one style or another. >> should we go for a bike ride? >> we could. >> bob is here and ready to go. it looks you have a cartoon
