i am daniel bergman.- and i am niklaus bauer. you are watching fly tvand today we are doing this: welcome back to fly tv.today, we are in ammarnã¤s. we will try to get some big graylings. with me today is mr. pike,niklaus bauer. he knows how to do this as well.he has fished for grayling before. we will see if we can manage this.- it will be nice to fish with light lines. and to do some dry fly fishing.- something lighter than a 9 weight. or a 10 weight.i think it will be great.
the weather is beautiful.a bit windy this morning, but... we can see a lot of bugs hatching,we have seen tons of sedges. some mayflies, some needle flies.- there are bugs hatching in your beard. i catch bugs with itto see what is hatching. i can dip it in the waterand see what drifts through it. it is like this bug net.- it is perfect. let's go fishing!- let's do this. i will follow the beard. will you start down there?- i will fish this mouth of the stream.
i wil go up here.it is a bit deeper down here. i will fish these black spots.- we need to cover the streams. happy hunting! i am using this size 14 sedge fly,primarily made of cdc. we do not see many sedgeshatching right now- -but we have seen a lotof them in the woods. you can usually get graylings to rise anyway. we will see if we can getsome up with this one. i walked down a bit here.
you can see daniel fishing the outletof the big lake up here. i walked down a bit in the stream,and will fish these small backwaters here. you can see a rock out there,and one a bit further out. we will fish the tailing waterfrom the stone here. the grayling is probably...it is a bit deeper down here -,-so the grayling is standing behindthe stone and in the sides of the stream. i am using a small sedge pupain the back, and then a dry up here. when you are fishing two flies like this,it is easier to get what they feed on. it can vary throughout the day,if the sun comes out they may like the dry.
then they go down andfeed on the pupas. this is a sedge pupa, the insectwhen it goes up from the bottom to hatch. this is a very simple imitation of that. we will fish them up as a dry fly,and then fish them slowly. when we come a bit further down,we can fish them as a nymph. sometimes you get them to strikeon the dry, and sometimes on the nymph. it is a good way to figure outwhat they are feeding on at the moment. we have walked about 55 yardsdown into the stream. i have been fishingthese nice, small, flat spots.
i fished them with a dry flyand a sedge pupa. i had like three or four risesbefore i hooked this nice grayling. it is such a beautiful day today. it did not like that. if you have not tried fishing for grayling,this is something you should really try. it is so much funand usually fairly simple. that is a nice fish. nice! an excellent fish.it will go back in.

it is about 1 foot 8 inches.- that is a nice fish. i am going to try to landthe fly in the back of this stream. as gently as possible. i am trying to drift the dry flyas freely as possible. i think you need to get in here.- you think so? it feels like a decent size. i actually saw the take. you really have to play these fishbecause they use the stream so well. that is a nice grayling.
man, they are strong. awesome!- cool! talk about a fat one! we are just fishing a normal 5 weight rod. the action is a bit softer.as the graylings are so soft in the mouth. if you have a fast action rod,it is easy to lose some of the fish. i have a prelight tippet.this is a 5x tippet and 0.16 mm. i think it is fairly goodfor these conditions. when i am fishing these cdc flies,and i get a lot of fish on them
-,-the natural cdc does not reallyfloat as well any longer. i just put some extracdc oil on the body. it will make it float really well again. it is a good tip when you fish cdc flies,to use this cdc oil that is available. it really make them float well. good to go! i need to eat something.my blood sugar is going down. should we put on some coffee?we will do that. some nice freshly boiled coffee.on the fire.
just missed it. i just love bending these softer rods. another good sized grayling. as you can see,they have been eating pretty well. it is a male,which you can see on the big dorsal fin. the females have a smaller dorsal fin,because when they are spawning- -they stand right next to each otherand the male puts his fin over the female. it is almost a bit romantic. here you can seethe little pupa i am using.
it is not that small,maybe a 10 size. i put some cdc in it,just to get it to float on the surface. it seems to work quite well.a bit troublesome to hook them. if i hook 1 out of 10 with that size,i am fine with it. see that one? and over there?that was a nice one. there are some really big fish.- on the other side as well. what are you going to fish?- i really do not know. i do not know what they are eating.- look at those guys. maybe we need to be a bit careful.or we will push them to the other side.
and then we have to go backand forth all evening. check it out! it felt so good,because i actually... i had like ten strikes before this one. oh, you are standing on the stone. it is a bit deeper out here. thanks, man. you are doing the double... i am popping it in.- that rod is so soft.

casting like 30 yards casts,and not hooking the fish. i think it was a good choice.see if we can put this baby back. it is pretty deep here. good job! when i present these sedges,i want as long of a free drift as possible. they do not seem to be taking them when they are skating. what i tried to dowhen i had a rise far out- -was that i tried to landthe line upstreams. it is a bit tricky because ofthe currents here in the middle.
they quickly create a bow on the line. this is what is hatching at the moment. it is a small mayfly.i have no clue of the gender whatsoever. bye bye! that is why this brownish pupais working well at the surface now. i have got like 50 ofthese small mayflies on my leg. they are crawling upand hatching on my leg. that was rock'n'roll! things are starting to move.- now, it is starting to move.
it feels like there aremosquitos all over the place. that is a good fish, daniel.- i need to follow it. are you going to follow it?- i need to. i will get out of your way.- i think it will back soon. very soon. is it a 5 weight?- yeah. i wish i had the 8 weight. no!- you lost it? it came off.
that looked like a big one.- yes, it did. it looks like they are feedingkind of on and off. we see a lot of fish risingand we get some action. then it stops, and then it continues.it is not a steady feed. if we look at the fish we have caught,they have been so fat. i do not thinkthey need to feed at all. sedge and a mayfly nymph. let's see what happens. first cast with a new fly.
